Can you write on Tyvek?
Actually, there's no need to overthink it-you can write on it.
However, many people who use it for the first time wonder, "Why won't it write?" This is mainly because they treat it like regular paper. Tyvek is actually made of plastic (HDPE), and its surface is non-absorbent-that's the key.
If you try to write directly on it with a gel pen or a ballpoint pen, the ink will usually smudge or smear at the slightest touch. We see this quite often here; it's not an isolated case.
The Best Way to Use It
If you're just making notes, it's actually quite simple: generally, use an oil-based marker. It dries quickly, doesn't smudge easily, and rarely causes problems. For outdoor use, some people switch to a paint marker, which is more durable. Another often-overlooked option is a pencil-it works too and is water-resistant, though the writing will fade over time.
A quick note on printing
Some clients ask if they can just use a printer.
To be honest, we don't recommend messing around with standard office printers-the results are inconsistent.
Generally, the approach is:
Barcodes, serial numbers → Thermal transfer
Logos, patterns → Screen printing or UV printing
These are standard practices and save a lot of hassle.
A few small details to avoid pitfalls
Here are a few things we often remind our clients:
Test on a corner before writing
Don't rub it immediately after writing; wait a few seconds
Try to avoid using greasy crayons or similar materials
That's about it
Tyvek isn't hard to use-it all comes down to one thing: don't treat it like paper.
With the right tools, it goes smoothly;
otherwise, you'll constantly feel like something's off.
